More Book Covers

I think I mentioned earlier this year that this summer was going to be very busy for me and publishing, right?

So, I got these covers in my email box recently...

Mythologically Torqued (which I have been mistakenly calling Mythically Torqued, apparently) just got the cover out...

If you're still reading this, or reading it again, the cover's been redacted for a new cover... I don't know when we'll get the new cover, or what was wrong with the old cover, so I'm just weird and grumpy right now. I'll post the new cover when we get it, probably some time over the weekend.

SIGH.

I got a look at the author list, which puts me in good company with Adrik Kemp and BA Tortuga, among others... (Adrik was in my Coming Together: Among the Stars anthology last year with a brilliantly diverse piece called "Of Gods and Men" and if you haven't heard of BA before, you should take some time to check out an enormous backlist of fantastic work...)

This book will also be released in a paperback edition, weighing in at a hefty 100,000+ words (so I could smack someone with the book and it will hurt.)

You will also, if you prefer, be able to order my story, "How 'Bout Them Apples?" as a stand alone volume, like with all the current Torquere anthologies...

Mythologically Torqued, Vol 2 will be available August 19th.

And....

Yesterday I also got this

I gotta say, it's with some sadness that I bid adieu to Beau and Vin, who've been a huge part of my life for the last few years. Don't worry, they're not gone for good (Vin will be a side character in All That Jazz, and Beau will be a side character in Punked Up) but as main characters, I'm saying my temporary farewells. The two boys are well on their way to becoming adults, and while that has its own trials and tribulations, this particular chapter of their story is done.

(An idea has been lingering for a while of a sixth novel, set after Punked Up, called Bad Rap, which may come back to them when they are a little more established as being adults...)

Classic will be available September 2, also in paperback.

London Steam

It's the third day of Blissemas and Cara Sutra has some stuff for you... so you should definitely go check that out... (I'd suggest using the envelope link to her entry to find it, because her website has it going ON... and I have no idea where the blog post is that she's going to be advertising... especially since I'm writing this blog post several days in advance because I am going to be BUSY as all get out for most of this month...) Comment on her blog entry to get an entry into the Kindle paperwhite full of smut...

Anyway, check it out...

So, I have a couple of things for you today; first is this List of LGBT books which gives you the opportunity to look through some really great stuff that's available... I have a couple of offerings on there, as well as recognizing some names. But not all, and that's awesome. I plan to spend a bit of my Christmas money on some new reads for next year...

And then the other thing is this... I got my cover for London Steam recently...

Isn't it lovely? Especially since I was not particularly helpful to my cover artist... seriously, I think I said something like "it's steampunky, so make a street with fog and find a historical looking cover model..." Usually, I like to look through the various stock photo options to find something nice, but I've been up to my eyeballs, which you all know, and I sort of threw it at her and ran away screaming...

Which means I'm thrilled to see this one, and how awesome it looks. Two thumbs, way up!

Now, London Steam was a series of steampunk shorts I was working on, originally published with Torquere Press. The first came out with the anthology Shifting Steam, then the other two stories, Blister Effect and Synchronous Rotations, were released as stand-alone bits.

Unfortunately, because they're NOT stand alone bits, but I was new at marketing and also at writing book 'blurbs... it wasn't really clear that they're part of a series. Some people who bought Blister Effect didn't realize there was a previous book... which kinda makes the rest of the story not make loads of sense.

Bad marketing on my part, and I really wasn't given lots of advice or guidance toward making it more audience accessible. Ah well, live and learn.

Originally, I planned to write a bunch of these stories and publish them once every six months or so. That didn't work out so well... part two went out of print shortly after part three became available, so...

Anyway... I got my rights back recently, and JM graciously agreed to publish the three stories I already had in an author's edition, and I would re-draft the fourth (unpublished) story, Obscurity Schism, for inclusion in this volume.

Even if you've bought the other stories before, this has some extra material, about another 20 pages or so... and a lovely new cover. If you haven't read them before, this is the best time to get a copy and check it out...

Scheduled for release December 28, 2015...

News!

First off, there's this...

I've been posting a bit on Facebook about this book and what it means to me...

Honestly, I can't even. Wordz!

I've been living with some version of Bastian Hooke in my head for almost 20 years now; he's a permanent resident. So it's really a life's goal to be able to share him with other people. I don't know if that means he'll move out and move on, or not... hard to say. It's sometimes a little disconcerting to have a thief and an assassin living in your head full time and commenting on shit.

A Marked Man will be released December 18th. I'm having a Facebook release party... please stop by, even if it's just to say hello...

Also, other news... Blues' production date has been moved up significantly; Instead of mid-March, Blues will be hitting Kindles everywhere on January 28th! Wooo hoo!

They Do

Last year, Elizabeth and I did a challenge; the project was to write one ultra-short story per week for six months.

We both missed a few weeks here and there, but eventually we got to our goal, and about a month ago, Whetting the Appetite came out... but before that, there was months and months of writing short stories and very little gratification for it. We wrote and saved, wrote and saved.

Very early in the process, I wrote a little short called Home Inspection; I'd recently had a discussion with a friend about Grindr - he cruises a lot, you understand. But he also has a lot of complaints about the elitist attitude of the app-users. Much like any sort of dating app/situation/bar, there are people who seem to think that if they're very specific with their requirements, they'll get exactly what they want. (I have a girlfriend who had a list of 27 things that a man had to have, had to be, or had to Not Do in order to get a second date... ) In any case, I'd found the concept sort of intriguing... fiddled with the idea of writing a story about it, and never did. Until this short-story marathon came up.

(As a note, Elizabeth, I'm still waiting for you to write your hook-up story... ::cough cough ahem!:: )

So I wrote a short story about a very unlikely couple; a professional black man and a blue collar white guy.

It's one of my favorites in the collection.

And since I wrote it so early in the year, I had to live with it sitting there, doing nothing, for quite a while. I saw a number of writing calls where I could take the story out, lengthen it up a bit, and send it out. I kept not doing it. Which was, perhaps, harder than it should have been.

My reasoning was, if Elizabeth and I took out the best stories to send in to other collections, we'd be left with a collection of mediocre stories and who'd want to read that? In the end, I'm glad we didn't cherry pick through the collection, because I think we've got some great stories to offer, and I really like the flow of the collection. (Go buy it! Sheesh!)

Eric and Temple, however, have never quite left my mind, even after the deal was sealed. I always wanted to do more with them.

Elizabeth and I teased a bit with the idea of writing a second book, Satisfying the Appetite (maybe?) where we took some of the shorts from Whetting and fleshed them out. I've been out and out yelled at by a couple of readers who want to know what the HELL happened in the end of BoyMart, and I personally want to throttle Elizabeth for the ending of Woman with the Blue Tattoo. There are several stories in there that could become novels or novellas of their own, worlds to explore and universes to expand upon.

I've been mostly working on novels... Blues is finished, I'm waiting for one last set of beta read opinions, and I'll start edits probably around mid-May for submission in June/July... I'll probably start writing Classic in November, and then the two side-stories, All that Jazz and Punked Up...

I'm currently in the middle of writing Howling Bitch - it's going quite well, and I'm enjoying it.

And novels are all good and well; I enjoy writing novels.

But there's something quick and dirty about a short. No matter how much I tell myself "this is the year of working on longer projects," I find myself considering little ideas. I've actually stepped up and started collecting submissions for an anthology project of my own. (This is because I have lost my fucking mind... but still, should be interesting!)

Also, I really like the thrill of getting acceptances back; for a little project, for a big project, for a charity project. All of these things are wonderful, wonderful feelings. But with novels, they're really spread out. I can only write about 2 novels in a year...

So, I give in to temptation. Sometimes.

And I'll put together a short story for this antho or that collection.

Eric and Temple had more to say. I saw the opportunity to let them say it.

Building Us will be available June 15th.

And in Other News

Sometimes my days are a little too full.

This isn't exactly a complaint, just sometimes I feel like things are happening so fast that I don't really get time to enjoy them before I'm on to the next thing.

Also, I'm slightly worried about the "hedonistic treadmill" which is one of my favorite themes from The Happiness Project. (tl;dr human beings always want moremoremore to be happy. we suck.) The idea's not unique to Rubin, but that's where I first came across the idea that while I might suck, I suck about the same as everyone else, which is something, I guess...

My concern comes up that eventually I'll take for granted my publishing and the people I work with and the squee of new cover art...

That eventually I'll believe that I deserve all this.

Which is going to turn me into a giant asshole. And believe me, I don't want to be that way. (I've met a particularly famous person, who I won't name here, who is a giant asshat... because he's used to being treated a certain way... )

So, today (well, yesterday, now that you're reading this...) I got my new cover art.

Pistols & Guns is a short story, a western erotic romance... I got to have fun giving my heroine a truly horrible name (that might be a theme with me. Having a horrible name myself, I have a tendency to distribute them. It's a weird compulsion, like "this milk is going bad, here, SMELL THIS!")

Anyway, I recently sold Pistols & Guns to Hot Ink... and I'm looking forward to sharing it with you.

(Of course, now I also need to write a 'blurb for it... oh yay!)

And I got another acceptance in my email box. It's a pre-official acceptance (the publishing house could still nix me at the last minute, which has happened to me before...) so I can't say more about it than that... or, I could, the publishing house could nix me, and then I'd feel like an idiot. But ya know, that happens...

Today I did a little over 2,300 words on my NaNoWriMo project... so after taking two days off to cough my lungs out, I'm getting back to work...

Blood Cries Up

So.... I got this today.

Also my editing and marketing schedule, which is quite tight.

I need to read/review/make changes by the 3rd of September... that's 8 days. Yikes! On the plus side, I can usually manage to do my edits in one or two sessions.

I should get copy edits by the 14th, and my marketing document is due back on the 16th. Proofing copy is due back on the 20th, and release date is scheduled for October 2nd.

You should totally mark that on your calendar, because this is an awesome story, I totally love it, and you will, too!

So, here's my latest cover.

Very nice... yummy, even. Due out in the Spring of 2013... I'll let you know as soon as I know what the actual release date is.

NINE NINE NINE (Nom nom)

So... thrilled, thrilled, thrilled. I might even be so thrilled as to do the Michael Jackson zombie dance... (included here for your edification.)

Ok, maybe not quite that thrilled, but only because I can't dance. I mean, even seriously easy crap like the Electric Slide are beyond my mortal ken.

But I'm very pleased to announce that my zombie piece, Dead in the Water, was accepted to Sommer Marsden's anthology, Hungry for Love.

The Coming Together publications are charity pieces - meaning I get paid in warm fuzzies, and profits from the books go to the charity of the editor's choice, in this case being The American Diabetes Association.

This makes nine acceptances since I started submitting work about 18 months ago... give or take. I can't remember exactly when I submitted "Golden Moment," altho I clearly remember being notified that I'd been accepted on or about my birthday...

It's been a fantastic year and a half. I'm still pulling in about one acceptance every other month.

Special thanks to Jeanne SG for her help with editing this piece, and her wonderful commentary...

PS - If you love zombies and you love erotica (and if you don't like either, what the heck are you doing reading my blog??) I'd like to take this moment to recommend that you read Sommer's Zombie Exterminator series, starting with We Kill Dead Things. It is by far one of my favorite pieces of erotica.

Steamy Magazine

My steampunk erotic story, Deep Breath, is featured in this magazine. So, go buy one. Or I'll be running a contest soonish for a free copy, if you'd rather wait. I'll have to think of something extremely cool, since this magazine is amazing! I'm very pleased that the Seans asked me to contribute to their first issue, and I wish them all the best with the project.

Cover Art

I love it... look at the wolf... and the airship over London... and Dex's eye. Totally cool. Thrilled to see it.
